Growing up in Central Florida, Scott Marchant spent his youth exploring the orange groves, pine flatwoods, and scrublands around Orlando, convinced he had found true wilderness. However, an eye-opening look through the pages of National Geographic changed his perspective, revealing a world beyond swamps and “elevation-challenged” topography. The moment Scott laid eyes on the Sierra Nevada, his fate was sealed; he knew the peaks of the West would be his new home. In 2002, his life’s journey brought him to Boise, Idaho, which has been his base ever since. Oh—there was a two-year stint in Stanley, but he quickly learned that subzero temperatures put him in the wrong ZIP code. Scott spends his time in the backcountry, researching, photographing, and publishing hiking guidebooks that share his passion for the mountains with fellow hikers. He hopes you discover some special new places in The Hiker’s Guide Hells Canyon & Seven Devils Country.
Tracey Baer’s connection to the outdoors began at an early age on the open plains of Nebraska, where
she spent her childhood searching for arrowheads, swimming in creeks, and roaming on horseback. She started riding as soon as she could walk, and by age 6, she was already setting out on solo ventures, cultivating a sense of curiosity and adventure that continues to guide her today. In her early teens, Tracey moved to Colorado, where her love for the mountains took root. That passion followed her to Idaho in 1997, fresh out of college, in pursuit of a life as a “ski bum with a real job”. That vision evolved into a 22-year career at Sun Valley Resort. Today, Tracey has traded the 9-to-5 world for an outdoor lifestyle. In addition to hiking, she enjoys skiing, fly fishing, and whitewater rafting. When she’s not exploring the backcountry, she runs her own gardening business in Boise and pursues a variety of passions, including cooking, martial arts, diving, and underwater photography. She believes deeply in the power of the outdoors to heal, inspire, and connect. She divides her time between Boise and Sun Valley, Idaho.
