Winter Read Book Group: "Frankenstein" (and Friends)

Winter Read Book Group: "Frankenstein" (and Friends) In-Person

The 2026 Winter Read is the 1818 novel by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein - a story she wrote at age 19 in response to a ghost story contest among friends. The story she wrote has fascinated the collective imagination ever since. In this book group, we will discuss the many layers of the novel and also Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," which appears in Frankenstein and was important to Mary Shelley; Coleridge was a friend of hers. In some ways, both texts have something to say about friendship, as well as about a lot of other themes!

A 4-week discussion group, led by The Community Library’s executive director Jenny Emery Davidson. Meeting on Wednesdays in February from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in the Lecture Hall. In-person only. Registration is requested to join us for the full series. Reading schedule:

  • February 4: Discuss Volume 1 of Frankenstein
  • February 11: Discuss Volume 2 of Frankenstein
