Winter Read Films: "Frankenstein" (1910) and "Frankenstein" (1931) In-Person
A double Winter Read film screening, celebrating our 2026 community-wide read of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and the many creations it has inspired over two hundred years. Join us throughout February for films, speakers, and discussions.
First, we'll watch the 1910 American short silent horror film, Frankenstein, produced by Edison Studios. Considered the first screen adaptation of Mary Shelley's work, the film was considered lost for many years but was restored by the Library of Congress in 2018 and a score by Donald Sosin was added.
Then, we'll view the 1931 film that has influenced popular imaginings of Mary Shelley's story ever since.
A scientist uses corpses to create a monster, who later incurs the wrath of the local villagers when he impulsively kills a little girl. Subsequently seeking out his creator, the creature flees with him to a nearby windmill.
71 minutes. Rated PG. From Universal Pictures. Directed by James Whale and featuring Colin Clive, Boris Karloff, John Boles, Edward Van Sloan, Dwight Frye. In-person only. Registration requested.
