I Met Him in Paris In-Person
Film screening of an historic film, partially shot here in Sun Valley.
I Met Him in Paris is a 1937 romantic comedy film released on May 28, 1937, and featured Claudette Colbert, Melvyn Douglas, and Robert Young. The film is centered around a woman's adventures in Paris and Switzerland, and Switzerland, in this film, is portrayed by our own Sun Valley, Idaho! Sets were built near Baker Creek and at the top of the Proctor Mountain lift and the filming happened in the very first ski season that the resort was open.
The film follows Kay Denham, played by Claudette Colbert, who is engaged to Berk Sutter but decides to take a vacation in Europe before her wedding. Upon arriving in Paris, she encounters two men: Gene Anders (Robert Young) and George Potter (Melvyn Douglas). While Gene initially appears charming and protective, George is wary of him, knowing that Gene is married. The story unfolds as Kay navigates her feelings for both men while engaging in various winter sports in Switzerland, leading to comedic and romantic situations.
Claudette Colbert was one of Hollywood's highest paid leading ladies from the late 1920s through 1950s and whose career began on Broadway in the 1920s. She met ski instructor Friedl Pheifer in St. Anton, Austria in the winter of 1934-35 and their friendship was instrumental Friedl's first visit to Sun Valley when she suggested he visit in 1938. He went on to be the head of the Sun Valley Ski School and coached Colbert in 1941 to win her Sun Valley Gold Race pin, much to her studio's dismay.
