"Vermeer: The Greatest Exhibition" Film Screening

"Vermeer: The Greatest Exhibition" Film Screening In-Person

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has put together the largest Vermeer exhibition in history - it will never be repeated. This momentous retrospective is the largest ever devoted exclusively to the “master of light”, with 28 of his 35 known works from countries all over the world. Never have so many Vermeer masterpieces been brought together in one place.

Exhibition on Screen’s documentary film Vermeer: The Greatest Exhibition brings this historic exhibition to more audiences worldwide. This stunning documentary, released in April 2023, invites audiences to a private viewing of this spectacular exhibition on the big screen, accompanied by the director of the Rijksmuseum and the curators of the show.

Vermeer: The Greatest Exhibition is directed by David Bickerstaff (Pisarro: Father of Impressionism, Sunflowers) and provides art lovers with a chance to see Vermeer’s masterpieces – including Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Geographer, The Milkmaid and the newly restored Girl Reading a Letter at the Open Window - in a way that no one else can. As well as a unique encounter with the work of the great 17th Century artist, the film reveals insights from the team behind the Exhibition, world-renowned curators and Vermeer experts, shedding new light on Vermeer's mysterious life and masterful work, the artistic choices and motivations for his compositions, as well as the creative process behind his paintings.

Runtime is 90 minutes. Courtney Gilbert, curator at the Sun Valley Museum of Art, will help open the event with a short lecture.

One of the great Dutch Masters, Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) lived and worked in Delft. His work is best known for his tranquil, introverted indoor scenes, his unprecedented use of bright, colourful light and his convincing illusionism. Luxurious fabrics and dangling pearls make his masterpieces a feast for the eyes not to be missed.

2022 was a milestone for Exhibition on Screen as the award-winning company celebrated a decade of bringing art films to cinemas across the world. Since its launch Exhibition on Screen has released over 30 films and sold more than 4 million cinema seats across the globe from London to Los Angeles, Berlin to Brisbane, Caracas to Cape Town. Seventh Art Productions, the company behind the Exhibition on Screen series, won a BAFTA for Best Documentary and were nominated for another for Best Cinematography, along with many other prestigious awards. Exhibition on Screen creates cinematic journeys into the personal and creative lives of history’s best loved artists and their work. Amongst the roster to date are deep dives into the life and careers of Frida Kahlo, Van Gogh, Lucian Freud, Rembrandt, Matisse, Munch and Manet.
