Capturing the Unsung Power of Point of View In-Person
Breakout Session 1 for the "To Taste Life Twice" Seminar. Pre-registration is required.
Capturing the Unsung Power of Point of View in Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, Poetry
Instructor: Christian Winn
Have you ever wondered who should narrate your fiction and how? The best angle to deliver your poetry? Or what tack will truly capture the heart of your personal essays? Well, point of view (POV) matters big time, and this will be an exciting dive into the powerful and sometimes overlooked tool of POV decisions and maneuvers in all your creative writing – poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction. Winn will share samples of great published works that demonstrate the masterful use of first-person, second-person, the collective “we,” and third-person close and omniscient POVs. Writers will take part in exercises/prompts experimenting with POV in brand new work, as well as shifting and reimagining POV for works in progress. We will dig into why these choices are so essential in creating voice, heart, deeply compelling and empathetic characters, and delivering the best, most artful stories, personal essays, and poetry.
Christian Winn was Idaho's 2016-2019 Writer in Residence, he is the founder of the Writers Write fiction workshop series, co-founder and Director of Storyfort, and producer of the Campfire Stories reading series and the Couch Surfer Artist Series. He is a graduate of Seattle Pacific University and the Boise State University MFA program.
